ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL) TUTOR

Last updated: July 29, 2024

CVT ELL tutors teach English to clients on a one-to-one basis, helping clients learn and practice the language. Some clients are enrolled in English classes and wish to work with an individual tutor to reinforce their learning. Clients tell CVT that they value ELL tutors because learning English is essential to thrive in their new community.

Activities

  • Prepare lessons for weekly sessions.
  • Select books as part of lesson planning.
  • Teach reading, pronunciation and writing skills.
  • Reinforce class lessons in cases where clients are enrolled elsewhere.

Skills needed

  • To qualify as an ELL Tutor, volunteers should have experience teaching English to non-English speakers.
  • Volunteers in Minnesota who do not have this experience can meet this qualification by completing ELL training from the Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC), which is available at a nominal fee. Check class schedules here.
  • ELL tutors teach English to clients regardless of their native language.

Time commitment

  • CVT conducts background checks on all applicants. This will take about a week.
  • Six-month commitment.
  • Weekly one-hour meetings with client.
