The Center for Victims of Torture is committed to protecting the privacy and security of visitors to our Web site. The following discloses our policies concerning the gathering and sharing of information through this Web site. In brief, our policies are:
For further information, please see below.
Normal Web site Usage You can visit all portions of CVT's Web site without telling us who you are and without revealing any personal information. The only information we collect from a normal Web site visit is the name of your Internet service provider, the browser and type of machine you are using, the Web site that referred you to us, the pages you request and the date and time of those requests.
This information is collected on an aggregate basis only. For example, CVT tracks which pages are most popular among visitors as a whole, but we do not track information on which pages an individual visitor might look at during a visit to our site. We do not collect any other information - such as the name, mailing address, e-mail address, or phone number of the visitor - without the visitor's knowledge and permission.
Use of Cookies Cookies are pieces of information that are stored on your computer and are used for record keeping purposes. We use cookies to make visiting and using our Web site easier. Cookies can help us see which parts of our Web site are the most and least popular, and provide us direction to improve our users’ online experience.
Collection of Personally Identifiable Information
There are instances where CVT requests personally identifiable information, such as name, mailing address, e-mail address, and possibly additional information, to provide you with specific services, correspondence or e-mails.
Occasionally we do make our mailing list available to other organizations with related causes. CVT supporters can request their name, address and other identifiable information not be shared via e-mail at cvt@cvt.org, phone at 1-877-265-8775 or checking the appropriate box on a return mailing device. Opting Out
Persons who join or donate via the Web site and provide an e-mail address may receive e-mails from CVT with information about our programs and services. Each e-mail message includes an option to remove yourself from the mailing list and you may also opt out by sending e-mail to cvt@cvt.org or by calling us at 1-877-265-8775. Outside Links This site contains hypertext links to other sites. CVT is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such Web sites.
Children We do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13.
E-mail Addresses CVT asks for your e-mail address on our subscription, donation and advocacy action pages. This allows us to provide you with e-mail communications and to acknowledge receipt of donations received on our Web site. CVT does not sell, rent, or lend the e-mail addresses of our subscribers or visitors to the Web site. You may opt-out of our e-mail communications at any time by clicking on the unsubscribe or remove link located at the bottom of all our email communications. You may also call us at 1-877-265-8775 or e-mail Member Services to be removed.
Security This site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. CVT makes every effort to insure the secure collection and transmission of sensitive user information using industry accepted data collection and encryption methodologies. CVT's third-party online donation service, Convio, has stringent security measures in place, including encryption and policies governing employee access to personal information. CVT shall not be responsible for any harm that you or any person may suffer as a result of a breach of confidentiality in respect to your use of this site or any information you transmitted to this site.
Why it's safe to give online CVT uses secure server software (SSL) to process your credit card gift. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name, and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet. CVT uses industry-standard security software and systems. Credit card information and transactions are secured by Verisign. When you are on a secure donation page, you will see a closed lock symbol in your browser window. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, it will be in lower-right corner of your screen.
As another example, Mozilla's FireFox Web Browser displays the lock icon in the lower-left corner:
You will also notice that the domain name (located in your Web site address bar) begins with "https" on these secure donation pages. Information on these pages are encrypted for your security. If you have questions regarding the security of your credit card donation, contact Member Services or call 1-877-265-8775. If you prefer to not use your credit card on the Internet, just fill out the gift form, print it out and mail it to us or call us.
